Post X - Police Antwerp

Scope

In 2023, Police Zone Antwerp moved from several locations to a new master building at Post X in Berchem. The 85,000m² complex is located at the corner of the Borsbeeksebrug and the Binnensingel, an easily accessible base for the entire city.

Sustainability was one of the essential pillars in the design and realization of the building. Therefore, air quality tests, among other things, were included in the specifications so that, on the one hand, legal requirements were met, and on the other, the sustainability labels BREEAM and WELL could be achieved.

Project Overview

Airscan carried out extensive post-construction/pre-occupation air quality tests for gases such as Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Ozone (O3), Volatile Organic Compounds such as Formaldehyde (HCHO), Particulate Matter (PM2.5) and biological pollutants such as fungi and yeasts. In doing so, construction firm Besix (in collaboration with Sweco) had 3 objectives in mind:

  • Confirmation that emissions from building materials comply with the limits of Well, BREEAM and labor legislation.
  • That there is no infiltration of air pollution from outside air
  • To validate the proper operation of the ventilation system.

Result

The necessary reporting for the Well and BREEAM certification process were delivered for further assessment by the International Well Building Institute and BRE-Group. An action plan was developed for premises at risk of excessive concentrations of certain components. Both certifications should be achieved during 2024 and 2025.
